Blue Horseshoe Weddings’ introduction to venue styling
Blue Horseshoe Weddings is a venue styling company based in Chesterfield and great friends of Nora Eve Bridal. They are just about to open their new premises and we wish them the best of luck. We caught up with owner Louise to find out the inside info about venue styling and the top tips that you should be taking away for your big day…
About Blue Horseshoe Weddings
Louise runs Blue Horseshoe Weddings with her sister Lisa. Lou, the self-confessed crazy one looks after the administration, bookings and the venue styling. Lisa, being the more sensible of the two, looks after the accounts and the venue styling on the day. Their husbands Mark and Dan also get roped in to help with the weddings as well as fetching and carrying.
How did you start Blue Horseshoe Weddings?
We started our business as a hobby. My best friend Nicola was getting married and we couldn’t find a company to supply chair covers at a reasonable price so one day, as we were driving down the M1, I suddenly declared to Lisa that we should start a chair cover business. She rolled her eyes and looked at me like I was crazy.
Not put off, I got home, went on eBay and bought some second hand chair covers. They weren’t the best quality and we paid way over the odds for them but it was a start and I was determined. We advertised them on eBay and got our first booking at Painshill Park in Surrey. It was a huge Indian wedding, we charged barely anything and we had to stay all day and drive home at 3am but we were so happy we got the booking we didn’t care and we loved every minute!
The rest is history. We then bought some fish bowl centre pieces and, as bookings came in, we grew our stock. For many years we didn’t take any money out of our business, we didn’t pay ourselves a wage. We had a dream so invested everything we made back into our business. I was working full time as a travel agent and Lisa was working full time as a dental nurse.
We juggled weddings and work along with our young families. After I had my youngest daughter Nellie in 2011 I decided not to go back to work as a travel agent, I decided to throw everything I had into turning Blue Horseshoe into a proper business. and from that moment we have grown and grown, still investing everything back into the business until very recently when we have been recognised as an established reputable company.
What should couples prepare before meeting a venue stylist?
Couples need to think about what they are looking for from a venue stylist, what vision are they wanting for their wedding breakfast or ceremony. The more information and images you can gather before coming to see us the better, it gives us a better insight into what it is you have in mind. Your initial meeting will be very informal, it’s really to see if you like us and our products. You will get a feeling straight away with all your suppliers, go with your gut, you have to trust your suppliers so it’s important the rapport you establish is good. My main aim is to make all my couples feel comfortable and to gain their trust.
What are the biggest trends for venue styling in 2019?
Stunning classic flower displays and neutral tones with foliage continue to be classics for 2019 and into 2020. Greenery, metallic and a whimsical feel are totally on trend.
What’s your favourite wedding venue been so far?
There are so many great venues out there, we are blessed to have a good variety in our local area. Our favorites have to be the ultra modern, elegant and chic Casa Hotel, Chesterfield – the incredible staff, impeccable customer service and attention to detail are second to none and what it lacks in grounds it more than makes up for in luxurious 4 star, award winning facilities. Nothing a couple could ask for on their wedding day is too much trouble. Mark Ingram, conference and banqueting manager, goes above and beyond every single time, and working alongside their lovely new wedding coordinator, Annah, you just cant go wrong.
Ringwood Hall has undergone massive refurbishment and we are always incredibly proud to be a preferred supplier of theirs. They have so many choices where you can marry and celebrate your reception but the most stunning has to be their outside pavilion and rather spectacular marquee. Ringwood has everything going on, great rooms, a stunning 5 Bubble rated spa and spectacular grounds, and just when you think it cant get better they change something else and make it even better!
Have you had any unusual themes that you could tell us about?
We have had quite a few unusual weddings. We had one which was a halloween theme, so much fun was had and they even had a flash mob performing Thriller for their first dance!
Have you got a favourite wedding that you’ve done?
It’s so hard to pick a favourite. There have been quite a few that we have styled and looked at the finished product, stood and just stared, finding it hard to believe how beautiful a ceremony or wedding breakfast can look, some of them are simply breathtaking!
Sometimes its not particularly what an end product can look like, though, it can be emotional and overwhelming if we become close to a lovely couple. It sounds a little crazy but we do get so close to our brides. When it’s over it’s sad and I do miss them afterwards, we become so close with a strong bond! I always stay in touch and, of course, its so nice to hear about how their married life is going, and if babies come along, etc, and there have been a few actually over this past year!
My favourite baby story has to be a lovely couple who married at Mosborough. When they came in for their final meeting they had just found out they were having a baby, it had been a real tough struggle with quite a lot of sadness, but thankfully not this time, and the absolute cherry on the top would be announcing the gender of their baby with their family and friends at their wedding reception. I could actually cry even thinking about it! It’s so lovely seeing photos of their beautiful baby boy on Facebook, he is just adorable and the fairytale end for the sweetest couple.
